ILP "Design" iMovie

For my second independent learning project I decided to make an iMove about the Center for Academic Retention & Enhancement (CARE) Department on campus, which is a department dedicated to increasing the enrollment and retention rate of first-generation, low-income students at Florida State University. This informative iMove is dedicated to potential CARE 18' students, who will be 2018 class seniors in high school. This iMove will help expose the CARE summer bridge program to students, as well as introduce them to CARE staff, and provide students with helpful tips.

I learned a great deal using iMove such as adding audio to video clips, making PowerPoint like slides using title templates, adjusting audio sound and pitch to promote clear communication, and adding music in the background of the movie.

  1. I love your video! It is welcoming and reduces boundaries by introducing staff in addition to providing information. The Bloopers are a nice touch. They show the staff are real people and smiles break down boundaries.

I have a few recommendations: hold your phone/camera horizontally, subtitle the speakers' names and positions, include ethnically diverse students. It currently appears to be an African American program but I suspect that is not the case.

    1. Thank you so much for your feedback. The CARE Department definitely supports a diverse student body and maybe in another video I can highlight that by not only recording staff but also the students CARE supports.

    2. BTW - When I was a baby teacher working on my undergrad, I made a very insensitive blunder. I was in a mathematics theory class. We had to do a project. Since I know music I used music to teach fractions - a common practice. But I used music that worked for half and quarter fractions (and was one of the first songs I learned on piano) rather than considering culture: In the Land of Dixie. I meant no harm bc I didn't see race in the song... erroneously. But I learned that people do see race in your publications. Sigh (dum young mistake). If you appreciate multiculturalism (and I do), represent multiculturalism.

  2. I'm a CARE baby!!!!!:) CARE 16! I really enjoyed your video and I love the care staff. They are really great and so are the ambassadors(except mine lol I had Deshawn he was rude but he still was pretty great ambassador) . I enjoyed the summer bridge program, it really helped me a lot when it came down to transitioning from high school to college. CARE has been so great to me and I'm so glad programs like CARE exist.

    1. Lol DeShawn is a good friend of mine and we were CARE ambassadors together for CARE 16'. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and it is great to hear that CARE has impacted you in such a positive way.

  3. I thought this imovie was well constructed. There were some points where the music played louder than the people talking so I missed some of it but overall I learned a lot. I especially enjoyed the bloopers, it helped show how nice and lighthearted the staff is.

    1. Thank you for your feedback! everyone seem's to enjoy the bloopers and I really enjoyed interacting with the staff, and helping display their lively personality. Hopefully CARE 17' students can watch my video and have the same reaction to it. Also it was really difficult to adjust the music on iMovie but next time I will play with the levels more until I get it just right.

  4. I really like this! The only suggestion I have is to make some of the text move slower. Sometimes it went by too fast to read. Overall, this was extremely well done!

    1. I agree I can definitely make the text slower. My main objective is to inform students about CARE and if the text is difficult to read and comprehend it defeats the purpose of my message. Thank you for this feedback.
